Trail Grade/Condition
An old jeep road.  Steep first 1.5 miles, level for remainder.  Well maintained, though above treeline may be muddy in places.

Recreational Opportunities
Trail allows recreationist to enter sub-alpine and alpine country after only 1.5 miles of travel.  A good trail for day hiking.  Multi-day trip with tent camping at Carter or Crescent Lakes.  Good winter access.  For a longer hike you can also hike the 9 mile Crescent Lake Trail which includes the Crescent Saddle cabin.  It also provides a longer hike from Carter to Crescent Creek trailhead.

During steep first half of trail, hiker passes through hemlock forests and wetter areas with alder and willow.  As trail levels out, vegetation changes to the sub-alpine with lower growing shrubs and a multitude of wildflowers.  This level terrain offers best camping sites and excellent vistas.

Wildlife include moose, black and brown bear, mountain goat, and Dall sheep.  Winter Wolverine are occasionally seen. Hunting for these species is permitted in designated seasons.  Good Fishing for stocked rainbow trout in Carter Lake.  Fishing success varies at east end of Crescent Lake.  Review Alaska Department of Fish and Game hunting and fishing regulations.

Special Considerations
Summer access is difficult from this trail to west end of Crescent Lake, because of tall grass, brush, and the creek crossing on North end of lake does not have a bridge and may be difficult after heavy rains.

Creek flowing into Carter Lake is wide and without a bridge.  Expect to get wet.  Be prepared for rapid weather changes.  Use caution with bear and moose.  Boil surface water for 5 minutes before drinking.  Remember to pack out your trash.  You can contact a U.S. Forest Service office to receive more detailed information on safety precautions.

Cabin Reservations
Occupancy of Forest Service cabins is by permit only ($25 per night per party plus $8.25 reservation fee per cabin).  Reservations may be made up to 180 days in advance by calling 1-800-280-2267 or visiting any Chugach National Forest office or Anchorage Alaska Public Lands Information Center.
